Let’s Be Real: Mental Health – A Switch in Perspective: How Family Adapts
Episode 14: Show Notes.
Mental health is real; just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there. It is okay to feel the way you feel. It’s just a matter of finding your way out of it and not letting it suck you into an unhealthy situation. If we could all be a little more honest with each other, how much less lonely would we all feel? Our guest today is Hayley McLean, who is part of our extended family. Today we give some context to our honest conversation about the other side of mental health. We share some of our stories about watching our husbands struggle and how that affected our world, and how we wanted to be there for them and oftentimes fell short. Our spouses should be talking to us about certain things, but to unload that stress is not our doing. They should be talking to someone who has the expertise to help them. Our conversation today is candid, personal, raw, and real. Hayley dives deep into her personal experience dealing with, working through, getting on board, and realizing some specific things as her husband went through his own process of healing his mental health. “I find that there are three categories in which I keep my promise to myself when it comes to ensuring that I set myself up for a successful day. You dive into something like this, and it sounds like there are going to be 200 little avenues in order to get there, but really, for me, it [starts with] getting up at 5:45 in the morning.” — @MandyGill [0:11:18]
“We always talk about how we work our muscles and we want our legs to become stronger so we can run faster, well, the mind is much like a muscle. As long as we can continue to work that and do it on a regular, day-to-day basis, it does become one.” — @MandyGill [0:19:40]
“We can focus so much on the negative and allow that to get us down, and I’m not just talking about where we are right now, within our new [circumstances], I’m talking about in general.” — @MandyGill [0:27:12]
“Once you dial in the meals that you really enjoy and you start to add in different things, if you do have a job which requires a very demanding schedule, or you’re getting used to working at home but, at noon, you’re opening the fridge and you’re like, ‘What am I going to have?’ [meal prepping] is a wonderful tool to have in your belt.” — @MandyGill [0:36:37]

Episode 08: Show Notes.
So many of us are disconnected from our divine feminine energy because we believe that masculine energy is necessary to make it in the world and be successful. But what if we tapped back into our essence of love, openness, and grace? How might we be able to transform ourselves and the world around us? These are some of the profound questions today’s guest, Rebecca Streb of Be Naturally Fit, poses in our discussion today. Life After Deaf: Finding Grace, Balance, and Beauty in a Life Without Sound with Monique Williamson
Episode 07: Show Notes.
Can you imagine what it’s like waking up one morning to find that you can no longer hear? What raising two children, running a business, and being a new wife must be like when you have to navigate a whole new (silent) world? Our guest today, Monique Williamson, talks to us about how she advocated through the healthcare system and managed to find fulfillment in life after going deaf. She shares her traumatic experience with persistent vertigo, undergoing every test and therapy in the book, and leaving the hospital with no answers for years. When her hearing failed to return, she eventually opted for cochlear implants, which changed her life and facilitated hearing in her one ear. But, after numerous consequent health problems and misdiagnoses, it was later discovered that the severe ulcers in her throat and colon were caused by Crohn’s disease. What stands out from the conversation is Monique’s appeal to listeners about being their own advocates when it comes to their health, testifying to the many slip-ups the doctors and nurses had made during her five years of suffering. Our guest also talks about how she stays positive and why it is so important to keep focused on what you have rather than what you’ve lost in the most difficult periods of life.
